Story of Arju

In the quaint village of Bajkateri, Gulmi District, Arju grew up bright-eyed and full of life. But from her very first steps, the world presented her with a challenge that most children her age would never face. Arju had club feet — a condition that caused her feet to curve inward, making even the simplest of daily tasks an uphill battle.

Walking was difficult. Running was painful. And while the village around her buzzed with the energy of playing children, Arju often watched from a distance — carried on her grandfather’s back, her eyes carrying a quiet mixture of longing and resilience that was impossible to ignore.

Yet through all of it, Arju’s spirit remained unbroken. Her determination shone like a beacon in that small Himalayan village.

As if by fate’s gentle hand, Dr. Klaus — a renowned Nephrologist from Germany who had been working alongside the community to help establish a health centre in Bajkateri — was walking through the village one afternoon when he spotted something that stopped him in his tracks.

Arju’s grandfather was making his way along the edge of a dusty path, the little girl resting on his back — her gaze distant, her expression carrying the weight of a child who has already learned to expect less from the world.

Dr. Klaus approached them. He listened. And in that brief conversation, he learned everything he needed to know about Arju’s condition — and what he wanted to do about it.

Moved by Arju’s story, Dr. Klaus reached out to the team at Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital (SKMH) and arranged for Arju to undergo surgery to correct her club feet — fully supported through his personal initiative and the hospital’s expert care.

The surgery was a success.

When Arju blinked her eyes open after anesthesia, the world she woke up to felt different — brighter, wider, and suddenly full of possibilities that had once seemed impossible. The feet that had curved inward all her life had been corrected. The path ahead, quite literally, had been straightened.

A Village Transformed by One Act of Compassion

Arju’s journey touched the hearts of everyone in Bajkateri. Neighbours, families, and community members who had watched her grow up — carried from place to place, unable to run or play freely — witnessed something they would not soon forget.

Dr. Klaus had not come to Bajkateri with the intention of changing one little girl’s life. He came to build a health centre, to serve a community, to contribute something lasting to this corner of Nepal. But in pausing on that dusty path and truly seeing Arju he did something far more personal, and far more profound.

He gave her the gift of movement. Of independence. Of a future where her feet could take her anywhere she chose to go.

What Arju’s Story Reminds Us

Stories like Arju’s are not rare in rural Nepal. Across remote villages and mountainous districts, children live with treatable conditions that go unaddressed simply because the right person, at the right time, with the right resources, was never there.

At Project Propel Nepal, we believe that access to healthcare and compassionate intervention should not be a matter of luck. It should be a right — one that every child, in every village, deserves.

Arju is one story. But she represents thousands of others still waiting for their chance.
