Story of a Burn Injury – Nirmaya Tamang

It happened in an instant. Nirmaya Tamang was doing what she had done countless times before — managing a large pot of boiling water in her kitchen — when she slipped. The scalding water poured over her face and neck, leaving her with severe burn injuries that were as terrifying as they were sudden.

By the time she arrived at Chakreshwori Community Health Centre, her face was badly burned, her eyes were severely swollen, and she could not open them. She was in tremendous pain — and deep fear about what her face might look like once the swelling subsided.

Before & After the Burn

Immediate Care & a Difficult Decision

The health centre team acted without delay. Pain was managed immediately, and proper burn dressing was begun. Recognising the seriousness of facial burns, the team referred Nirmaya to a specialised Burn Centre for advanced care.

But her family hesitated. Deep in the middle of the fieldwork season, they felt they could not afford the time to travel. Despite the Burn Centre offering charity support for her treatment at no cost to the family, they ultimately refused to make the journey.

Nirmaya remained at the health centre — admitted, anxious, and quietly devastated by the fear of permanent scarring on her face.

Healing, One Dressing at a Time

With the referral declined, the team at Madhane Health Centre made a decision: they would not give up on Nirmaya. Consulting closely with the Burn Centre and sharing photographs of her injuries for remote guidance, they continued her treatment in-house.

Day after day, the team carried out regular wound dressing, pain management, and close monitoring. Proper wound care, done consistently and with precision, became the cornerstone of her recovery. Slowly over three weeks, Nirmaya’s condition began to turn around.

What had once been a badly burned, swollen face began to heal. And with it, Nirmaya’s confidence began to return too.

The Pressure She Carried Alone

As her recovery progressed, Nirmaya shared something that had weighed heavily on her throughout her stay: she had been pressured by family members to return to fieldwork — even while she was still injured and receiving treatment.

Had she given in to that pressure, the consequences could have been severe. Exposure to dust, physical strain, and the absence of wound care could have led to serious infection and lasting damage. The decision to remain admitted at the health centre — supported by the team’s continued care — was not just medically significant. It may have made the difference between a full recovery and a permanent scar.

A Face That Healed. A Spirit That Soared.

After three weeks of dedicated treatment, Nirmaya showed significant improvement. The healing that had once seemed uncertain had become real, visible, and remarkable.

“I had never imagined my face would heal so well.”

— Nirmaya Tamang

She left the health centre not just recovered, but relieved, grateful, and confident — emotions she had not dared to feel in those first frightening days after the accident.

Why Stories Like Nirmaya’s Matter

Nirmaya’s story is a reminder of what is at stake when communities lack easy access to healthcare — and what becomes possible when that care is close, consistent, and compassionate.

At Chakreshwori Community Health Centre, we exist precisely for moments like this: when a family cannot travel far, when an emergency arrives without warning, and when a patient needs someone to keep showing up for them, day after day, until they heal.

Nirmaya is doing much better today. And we are grateful not just that she recovered, but that she trusted us with her care.
